The latest unemployment figures have been released and it was good news for Nanaimo.

Although the provincial unemployment rate in B.C. jumped to seven per cent in March from the 6.3 per cent recorded in February and the national rate increased two-tenths of a point to 7.2 per cent in the same time period, Nanaimo's unemployment numbers dropped from 6.2 per cent to six per cent.

Sasha Angus, CEO of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation was reported in the Nanaimo Daily News saying that the breakdown of the statistics for Nanaimo indicate that most of the new local jobs were full-time and he said that approximately 100 part-time jobs were lost from February to March. "It's encouraging and we're pleased to see that unemployment in Nanaimo has been steadily decreasing for the past 12 month," Angus said. "Our recent survey of local businesses and what their plans are for the next year indicated that hardly anyone is looking to lay-off employees and many are planning to hire more in the coming year. B.C. Hydro's ($1.35billion) project to replace the John Hart generating station project in Campbell River is set to begin soon and Nanaimo is the largest centre closest to that so we're anticipating that we'll see great benefits here as a result as well."
